Using tablets/medication to prevent menstruation

A Woman may take contraceptive pills to prevent her from menstruating during Hajj season in order to be able to perform Tawaf. Scholars vary in their opinion whether one should take Pills in Hajj to stop Menstruation or use any other means to prevent menstruation. Some are of the opinion that women can use pills to stop menses as long as it is not prohibited or hazardous to health. There are pills available in the drugstores if you want to stop periods during Hajj or delay periods during Hajj. However, for a better understanding of the matter, please consult a scholar. Also, make sure you use these pills only after consulting a doctor.

What is the advice/ruling for women on periods during Hajj? How can a woman perform Hajj in her menstruation?

  • If a woman is in the state of menses (menstrual cycle) while leaving home, she can assume Ihram. She should better take a bath or make Wudu. Then facing Qiblah, she should form intention for Hajj and recite Talbiyah. However, she must not offer two raka’t nafl for Ihram.
  • If the menses start after entering in the state of Ihram, it does not disturb the state of Ihram and the Ihram remains intact. A woman can relinquish Ihram only after completing all the rituals of Hajj including the ritual clipping of hair. However, she should stay at her hotel/ apartment in Makkah and should not enter Masjid-ul-Haram until she takes the bath of purification. She should continue to recite Talbiyah, Takbir, Tahlil, Istighfar, etc. but avoid reciting verses of the Holy Qur’an. After taking bath for purification, she should perform Umrah.
  • Similarly, if a woman faces menstrual issues during Hajj and the menses begin before 8th Dhul Hijjah, she should assume Ihram in the same condition, i.e. form intention for Hajj and recite Talbiyah, but should not offer Salah at Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah or anywhere else in this condition. She should continue to do recite Talbiyah, Tasbih, etc. She should not perform Tawaf till she purifies herself.
  • If menses begin during Tawaf, a woman should discontinue Tawaf and come out of the Masjid-ul-Haram. As Saa’ee is performed after Tawaf, she should not perform Saa’ee as well. She should perform Tawaf and Saa ’ee only after becoming clean.
  • If menses begin just after completing Tawaf, she may perform Saa’ee, which is valid in this condition.

Note: It is recommended to consult and seek an opinion from scholars on doubtful Islamic matters.
