There are different methods of performing Hajj that can be classified into three categories:
Hajj-e-Tamattu: Hajj combined with Umrah with two Niya’hs, one for Umrah and one for Hajj. Pilgrims wear separate Ihram for each Hajj and Umrah. Animal sacrifice is compulsory.
Hajj-e-Qiran: Hajj combined with Umrah with one Niya’h. Pilgrims remain in the state of Ihram after Sa’ee. Sacrifice of animal is compulsory.
Hajj-e-Ifrad: Hajj without Umrah. Animal sacrifice is optional.
While all the forms of Hajj are rewarded by Allah (SWT), the most recommended method to perform Hajj by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is Hajj-e-Tammattu, which requires pilgrims to perform Umrah during the months of Hajj i.e. Shawaal, Dhul Qa’dah and Dhul Hijjah. They also perform Hajj in the same year with an animal slaughter on Eid-ul-Adha. It involves Tawaf and Sa’ee to be done twice, once for Umrah and once for Hajj.
First Day of Hajj
On 8th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims enter the state of Ihram and affirm their intention to perform Hajj. They pray the Fajr Salah and then perform Tawaf of Kaabah. Afterward they move to the hills of Safa and Marwa for Saa’ee after which pilgrims make their way to Mina from Makkah. Pilgrims stay overnight in the tents in Mina and perform all the prayers.
Second Day of Hajj
On 9th Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims move towards Arafat from Mina. After reaching Arafat, they offer Qasr Salah combining Zuhr and A’sar prayers. Pilgrims spend their time in Zikr and Ibadah of Allah (SWT) seeking His blessings and forgiveness. After sunset, pilgrims move towards Muzdalifah to spend their night under the open sky. After reaching Muzdalifah they offer Maghrib and Isha prayer together, and carry on with their zikr of Allah. Pilgrims also gather stones from Muzdalifah for the stoning at Jamarat, the next day.
Third Day of Hajj
On the third day of Hajj, pilgrims return to Mina for pelting stones. After reaching Mina, they perform the first Rami and throw seven pebbles at the largest Jamarat. After the stoning, pilgrims must sacrifice an animal to re-enact the story of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Afterwards, pilgrims (men only) trim or shave their hair and remove Ihram. Many proceed to Makkah to perform Tawaf and Saa’ee before returning to their campsite in Mina.
Final Days of Hajj (Day 4 & 5)
